Fix: Motif plugin doesn't load in Rhino 8 after upgrading from Rhino 7

Last updated: October 1, 2026

If the Motif plugin shows an error or won't load in Rhino 8, and you installed Rhino 8 after installing Motif in Rhino 7, a clean reinstall of the Motif plugins fixes it. This takes about 5 minutes.

Symptoms

  • Rhino 8 shows an error about the Motif plugin when it starts, or when you open the Motif panel.

  • The error may mention a DLL or an assembly that failed to load.

  • The Motif plugin works in Rhino 7 but not in Rhino 8.

  • You installed Rhino 8 after you had already installed Motif.

Cause

When you install Rhino 8 on a computer that already has Rhino 7, Rhino 8 copies over the plugins registered in Rhino 7. That means Rhino 8 tries to load the copy of Motif built for Rhino 7, which doesn't work. Reinstalling Motif after Rhino 8 is installed registers the correct version.

Solution: reinstall the Motif plugins

  1. Close Rhino 7 and Rhino 8. Open Task Manager and check that no Rhino processes are still running in the background. End any you find.

  2. Uninstall the Motif plugins. Remove every Motif plugin installed on your computer.

  3. Open Rhino 8 and confirm Motif is gone. The Motif panel and commands should no longer appear. If they do, close Rhino 8 and repeat step 2. Then close Rhino 8.

  4. Install the Motif plugins again. Download the latest installer and run it.

  5. Open Rhino 8. Motif should now load without errors.
