Motif plugin causing Revit to crash on open

Overview

A recent Microsoft Windows system component update is causing Autodesk Revit 2023–2025 to crash on open when affected plugins are installed. This issue affects Revit plugins that render using CEF and is not isolated to this plugin alone.

In the meantime, Motif plugins have been updated to avoid the crash. Please update your Motif plugin to the latest version to resolve this.

Symptoms

• Revit 2023, 2024, or 2025 crashes immediately upon opening

• Issue began after a recent Windows / Microsoft Edge update

• Occurs only when the Motif plugin is installed

Root cause

Microsoft updated a Windows system component in a way that disrupts how certain applications, including Motif, render their interfaces in Revit. This is a known issue with usage of Chromium Embedded Framework in Revit plugins. The issue is reported to Microsoft by multiple software vendors and Microsoft is aware and investigating the updates that cause the crash.

Resolution

Download and install the latest version of the Motif plugin. This update includes a workaround that resolves the crash.
