Add documents to Project Context

Last updated: October 30, 2026

Keep the client brief, standards, specs, and other project documents in one place your whole team can find. Anything you add to Project Context is available to the agent in every model and thread in the project, so you can check your design against it without leaving Motif.

What Project Context is for

Your model shows what you've designed. Project Context holds the information behind those decisions: what the client asked for, the standards you're working to, and what's been agreed along the way.

Each project has one Project Context, shared by everyone on the project. It's separate from the Content Library, which holds the models and assets you place in a model.

Once a document is in Project Context, you can ask the agent things like:

  • "Check the current design against the client brief and list anything that's missing or different."

  • "Which rooms are smaller than the areas in the room program?"

  • "Does this layout follow our tenant standards?"

The agent reads the model and the document, then gives you a list of differences, such as missing rooms, areas that don't match, or adjacencies the client didn't want. You decide what to change.

What to add

Add anything your team would normally check before making a design decision. For example:

  • Client requirements. Client brief, room program, scope agreement, RFP.

  • Standards and specifications. Specifications, BIM standards, firm or tenant standards, room data sheets, code excerpts.

  • Project communication. Meeting minutes, client emails, letters from authorities such as the fire marshal.

  • Visual references. Site photos, style guides, mood images, and reference renderings you want the agent to match.

  • Reusable instructions. Markdown files with prompts or checklists the team uses on this project.

💡 Keep a reference rendering in Project Context when you've found a look you like. In any thread, you can ask the agent to match the style of that image instead of pasting it in again.

Revit, Rhino, IFC, and GLB files don't go in Project Context. Bring those in as models or assets. See 📄 Publish from Revit for full details.

Supported file types

You can upload these file types to Project Context:

File type

Extensions

Can the agent read it?

PDF

.pdf

Yes

Images

.png, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .webp

Yes. For best results, reference the image with @

Text

.md, .txt, .csv, .json

Yes

Office documents

.docx, .xlsx, .pptx

Not yet. Your team can store and download them, but the agent can't read them

Other file types, including .svg, can't be uploaded. If you upload several files at once, Motif lists any it refused and uploads the rest.

💡 Want the agent to use a Word document or Excel spreadsheet? Save it as a PDF (or a spreadsheet as .csv) and upload that version.

âš  The agent reads the text in a PDF, not its drawings. On a vector drawing set, it can read notes, titles, and schedules but not the linework. To have the agent look at a drawing, upload it as an image.

Add a document

  1. Open your project.

  2. Select the Project Context tab.

  3. Click Upload, or drag files from your computer onto the page.

The document appears in the list with its name, file type, size, who uploaded it, and when.

You can also ask the agent to add a file for you, for example "Add this PDF to Project Context."

💡 Files you drop into an agent thread stay in that thread. If you'll need a document in more than one thread, add it to Project Context instead. See 📄 Use files and skills with the agent for full details.

Use a document with the agent

The agent knows what's in Project Context, so you can mention a document by name, for example "Check the design against the client brief."

To point the agent at one specific document, type @ in the agent panel and choose it from the list. See 📄 Use files and skills with the agent for full details.

💡 Be specific about what to compare. "Compare room areas on Level 2 against @Room Program and list rooms that are more than 5% off" gets a more reliable answer than "Does this match the program?"

Manage documents

From the Project Context tab you can:

  • Search and sort the list.

  • Download a document.

  • Replace a document with a newer version. It keeps its place in the list, so the agent and your team always use the current one.

  • Delete a document. You'll be asked to confirm.

Anyone with edit access to the project can upload, replace, and delete documents. Anyone with view access can download them and reference them with @.

Good to know

  • Very large PDFs may be too big for the agent to read. If the agent can't open a long spec book, split it into sections, such as one PDF per division.

  • Check the results. The agent explains how it compared the design to the document. Confirm anything important against the source before it goes to the client.

  • Keep documents current. Replace a document when a new revision comes in, so the agent isn't checking against an old brief.
